The Literature

The Efficacy of Interventional Music Programs

A recent study by Dr. Neema Sharda and other researchers demonstrated that not only is an inpatient music program beneficial but feasible. Personalized, in-person music programs function as a safe, nonpharmacologic intervention to hospitalized patients to help mitigate the detrimental effects of anxiety and pain perioperatively.

The researchers identified multiple groups across America’s health system that were interested in either non-pharmacologic pain management or bringing music to medicine. Ultimately, Dr. Sharda’s patient-level survey data suggests that patients who listen to music postoperatively benefit with regard to pain perception, mood, and overall satisfaction
